Background and Objective: Pregnancy is accompanied by extensive physiological changes that can cause pelvic girdle pain, decreased balance and decreased quality of life. Since choosing the appropriate strategy for relief from low back pain during pregnancy is important, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of combined core stability and balance exercises on pelvic girdle pain, balance and quality of life in pregnant women.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 pregnant women aged 20-35 years at 20-30 weeks of pregnancy, in two groups of 15 (training and control) who were identical in terms of age and other characteristics. The training program lasted for 8 weeks, three sessions per week and each session included three phases consisting of warm-up, core and cool-down. Warm-up for 15 minutes included pedaling on a stationary bike and performing static and dynamic stretching exercises. The exercise time was 45 minutes to one hour. Cool-down was also done at the end of the exercise session for 10 minutes. Before starting the exercise, fetal heart rate and maternal blood pressure were monitored and the exercise was performed according to the health of the mother and fetus. Pain, quality of life and balance were measured and compared using the Grotel Pelvic Girdle Pain Questionnaire, the SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and the Bass Balance Test, respectively.
Findings: The mean pelvic girdle pain score decreased significantly after the intervention, from 39.73±10.79 to 14.06±7.81 (p<0.001). However, in the control group, it increased from 27.40±10.51 to 54.93±8.53 (p<0.001). The average quality of life in the exercise group increased from 54.66±18.02 to 30.78±14.96. But in the control group it increased from 58.63±22.33 to 53.17±13.82 (p<0.001). Also, the average balance in the exercise group improved from 20.20±1.97 to 33.12±1.79 (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that combined core stability and balance exercises over eight weeks can reduce pelvic girdle pain, improve balance and improve the quality of life of pregnant women.
