Background and Objective: The morphology of the symphysis is a valuable tool for diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontics, and its morphology determines the position of the lower incisor during orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the cephalometric dimensions of the mandibular symphysis in patients with different vertical jaw relationships.
Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 180 standard lateral cephalometric radiographs of patients before the beginning of orthodontic treatment with a normal sagittal pattern (skeletal Class I) were examined. Patients were divided into three groups: Normodivergent, Hypodivergent, and Hyperdivergent, based on the vertical jaw relationships and vertical growth pattern of the mandible. Ten linear and six angular parameter related to the symphyseal dimensions were measured.
Findings: Of the total 180 radiographs studied, 140 (77.77%) were from females and 40 (22.23%) were from males. When comparing the measurements of the linear parameters, the Id-B (7.01±2.07 mm) and Id-Me (28.48±3.31mm) values in the Hyperdivergent group and the Pog-Me (9.71±2.23mm) and Go-Gn (72.61±4.69mm) values in the Normodivergent group were significantly higher than the other two groups. When the angle parameters were examined, significant differences were observed between the three groups for B-B1-Gn (p=0.007), Id-B/Go-Me (p=0.040) and IMPA (p=0.001).
Conclusion: Individuals with hyperdivergent jaw patterns had a longer total symphyseal length, and at the same time, the IMPA was significantly reduced in this group. This study shows us how important it is to carry out an analysis for each patient in order to make the correct diagnosis and treatment plan and avoid complex problems that can arise from an inadequate examination of the symphysis area. |
